You're getting married!

Let's make your ceremony as special and unique as you are a couple!

Marriage License

Before you can legally marry in the province of Prince Edward Island, you must first obtain a Marriage License from the Department of Vital Statistics.  Here's what you need to know:

  • A marriage license is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

  • Couples must make an appointment with Vital Statistics; both individuals must be present.

  • A marriage license costs $100.

  • When applying for your license, I highly recommend you also order and pay for your Marriage Certificate at the same time. This means once your Statement of Marriage (the document signed during the ceremony) is registered with the Province, you will automatically be mailed a copy of your Certificate, an official document that you may require for various reasons in the future. A Marriage Certificate costs $35.

  • At Vital Statistics, you will be given a Marriage Registration Package. It will contain the Marriage License and a Statement of Marriage Form.  The License is for my files. The Statement of Marriage Form is the actual form that gets signed during the ceremony. I ask my couples to simply hold on to this envelope for our in-person meeting; you need not worry about filling anything in.

Officiant's Role

The Officiant's role is limited to the delivery of the ceremony and ensuring it meets all legal requirements. They are not responsible for the issuing of the Marriage License or Certificate. Those are the responsibility of the Vital Statistics as noted in the above section.

Other than that, the couple is responsible for the ceremony details, but the Officiant can offer suggestions and help in any way they can. Whether your style is simple and low key or a big church-style celebration without the church, the couple is in total control of their day.

There are also no restrictions on where the couple chooses to host their wedding ceremony. If it's going to be outside, just ensure you have a back-up plan in case of bad weather.

The only other requirement are two witnesses aged 18+ that are able to sign the Statement of Marriage document during the ceremony.

And, ummmmm.....you have to be sober!
